As a customer of First National Bank in Pinckneyville, what changes can I expect due to the federal government’s decision to stop minting pennies?At this time there will be no changes to FNB’s process in regards to pennies. Checks can still be cashed for their full amount and deposits, including pennies, can still be made.
What future plans does FNB have for the penny issue?FNB leadership continues to monitor our local penny supply and is in contact with our currency suppliers. As things change, policy may change to reflect any changes in supply or government policy.
Will FNB still accept pennies as deposit items?Yes, at this time, we still will accept pennies as deposit items and in exchange transactions.
Am I able to buy pennies from FNB?Yes, depending on supply, we will still be able to provide pennies in rolls and individually at this time.
Am I able to buy rolls of pennies minted in 2025?
No, unfortunately, our suppliers have no way of guaranteeing rolls of pennies minted in 2025.
When will pennies stop being produced?The last order of the blanks used to produce pennies was placed in May 2025. The last penny was minted in November 2025.
Why are pennies not being produced any more?In 2024, the average cost of producing one penny was 3.69¢. This incurred a loss to the U.S. Treasury of $85.3 million in 2024 from penny production alone.1
